Video games are fun. Jumping and rolling all around strange worlds, enjoying action, mystery, drama and intrigue, we all have our special moments in thousands upon thousands of games. And each one of us has his favourite characters: Simon Belmont, Mario, Link, Snake, etc. Now, even though we have come to cherish most of them, they sometimes have weird attributes. Fetishes, behaviours and other things usually tell us that a game character may not be as sane as we once thought.
This is why I decided to create this little series. I was thinking on some of the characters during a class, since some students were fascinated by the Birdo situation. If you don’t know it, google it. You will be greatly surprised! In any case, the focus of this little very occasional series is to analyze some of the most popular Nintendo characters (and some not so Nintendo) and just show you how weird he or she is.
This time it is Yoshi. The faithful mount of Mario, this little cute dinosaur is known fur his lust of food and myriad of eggs. Since recent Nintendo-approved pair-ups show him with Birdo, I started to wonder how he felt with that. Let us first ask a question: is it a male or a female? As far as I have understood (yes, I am not referring to the canon right now, although I think it agrees with me), I always saw him as a male. In other words, he seems to have at least some gender confusion, as much as his “girl”.
Second, and that is the weirdest part, are the eggs. Have you noticed how blatantly our little colored dinosaur tends to throw his own offspring away? Just look at it: Yoshi’s Story, Super Smash Brothers and other games have shown that he does not care about his own children as long as he lives. Maybe this reaction has to do with how his children look. Although sometimes you get a legitimate lizard looking creature, some other times you just find a mushroom instead! Or worse: whenever he swallows an enemy, he traps his/her food in the shell.
Third is the undying loyalty the creature has towards plumbers. First it carries the little baby around his own island to save him from dangers and all, but afterwards he carried the hero around only to be dissed over a pit, so Mario can reach higher places. Maybe it is because he feeds them. Have you noticed the swallowing capacity of a newly born Yoshi? he can eat things up to three times its own size! And after reaching maturity it does not end. He gobbles up whatever he finds on his way.
Now, this all tends to show extreme fanaticism on Yoshi’s side. He is willing to give up his own offspring and his own life to aid our hero, Mario, to succeed over Bowser’s plans of ruling the Mushroom kingdom. Much like the Green Koopa, he is not bashful about this. One of Nintendo’s most recognizable characters has thus the tendency to give all and receive nothing. And he is weird because this whole egg business: I don’t quite get how reproduction tends to work in the dinosaur’s biology.
Well, I hope you enjoyed this rendition of this series, If you liked it leave the like a comment. Maybe you know a little more about that cute little reptile with suicidal tendencies.
May they smile upon your way!
